the best compliments i've ever received
my therapist made me write them out during our session, so now you get to read them too
If you read my latest weekly glimmers…yikes lol. I was UNWELL. It’s fine, I’m fine, everything’s fine!!! This week has been world’s better so far - I’m chalking up last week as a wash and blaming it on the weather and the full moon.
Anyways, while my spirits are high, I thought I’d share some of the nicest compliments I’ve ever received. I’m a big words of affirmation girly, so when people say this kind of shit, it sticks.
Disclaimer: I booked an additional therapy session on Monday to ~debrief~ and she had me to this exercise during our session. It was a little weird at first, but extremely therapeutic. Thought it would make for a good Substack and a reminder to y’all that the world usually sees you in a much better light than you often see yourself.
Like I said, big words of affirmation girly, so I remember exactly who said these things and when. The compliments have stuck with me for years - some from friends, some from partners, some from complete strangers.
I've also been making an effort to compliment others more genuinely and specifically. Not just "I love your outfit" or "you look great," but something specific that shows you see them. The world needs more compliments.
And speaking of compliments that matter...
Here's a collection of words that have wrapped around my heart and stayed there.
1. You have a really kind spirit and energy.
2. I know I don’t really know you, but I feel really comfortable around you.
3. It’s impossible not to like you.
4. Whenever I think about how fun my friends are, you’re always the first to come to mind.
5. I told my mom I can’t wait to see Beth because I’m desperate for a good laugh that sends me to the floor and brings tears to my eyes.
6. You remind me of (insert very cool person). You should be friends!
7. Whoever you end up with is going to be one of the best people there is…because you’re one of the best people there is.
8. I’ve never seen eyes like yours before.
9. You have the same laugh as your mom.
10. You’ll figure it out because you always do. You’re Beth, you figure shit out better than anyone I know.
11. I really like your taste in music.
12. *sends photo of disco ball* I saw this and it reminded me of you!!
13. I feel like I can just talk to you about anything. You’re so easy to talk to.
14. You've somehow managed to make your apartment a perfect physical expression of who you are. And I’m obsessed.
15. This is the best birthday I’ve ever had. Thank you.
16. Please never stop writing and being who you are.
17. Anyone would be lucky to know you and privileged to love you.
18. I wish I had your courage to just go for the things that I want.
Not me sobbing all over again 🥹 Highly recommend surrounding yourself with people who love you loudly.
If you're feeling like shit about yourself (as I clearly was last week lollll), open your Notes app and do this exercise. Sometimes we need to borrow other people's vision of us until our own comes back. It's not about ego; it's about remembering your worth when your brain is being an unreliable narrator.
thanks for reading,

I struggle with self esteem and my therapist had me ask my friends why they liked me/liked having me as a friend and responses were so "simple" yet so powerful! We always tell others the best things and talk sh*t about ourselves, while we are actually very nice people and, well, if we have friends that love us that must mean something!
Keep shining ✨
